Welcome to the Burundian Community of Canada - Toronto Region!
Our association brings together Burundians living in the Greater Toronto Area to celebrate our culture, support one another, and share our heritage with the broader community. We organize events, offer resources for newcomers, and create spaces for social connection, cultural exchange, and mutual support. Together, we strive to preserve our traditions, promote unity, and build a vibrant, inclusive community for all generations.
ABOUT

Burundian History in Canada:
Canada began receiving Burundian refugees in noticeable numbers during the 1990s and 2000s due to the civil war and ethnic conflicts in Burundi. Many arrived through government-assisted refugee programs and settled in cities like Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Winnipeg.
These communities have contributed to cultural diversity through associations, churches, and cultural events, while maintaining links to Burundian traditions and languages. Over time, they have become part of Canada’s broader African diaspora, with involvement in local community development and advocacy for peace in Burundi.
Burundian Community Statistics:
According to the 2021 Census, approximately 14,110 individuals in Canada reported Burundian ethnic origin. Of these, 6,810 were male and 7,295 were female. In Ontario, 4,935 individuals reported being born in Burundi, with 1,790 males and 2,510 females. The majority of Burundian immigrants in Canada are first-generation, with a smaller proportion being second-generation.
According to the 2021 Census, approximately 125 individuals in the Greater Toronto Area reported being born in Burundi. This data is available in the Census Profile for the Toronto Census Division. For more detailed information, you can refer to the Statistics Canada website.
